Bottoms come in wildly different cuts — cargos, denim, sweatpants, tailored trousers, technical shorts — and each fails in its own way, so the read shifts with the style.

• Waist and rise. The waist measurement and rise decide comfort more than anything. A "true" waist can still sit wrong if the rise is short. Read both numbers.
• Fabric and stretch. Denim weight, whether there's stretch, and how technical fabric is finished all change the fit and feel. A rigid fabric with no give runs smaller than the numbers suggest.
• Hardware and closures. On denim and cargos, check zippers, buttons, and rivets in the QC set. Sticky zips and loose rivets are reasons to reject before onward shipping.
• Stitching at stress points. Crotch seams, pocket corners, and belt loops take the load. Even, reinforced stitching there is the mark of a find that lasts.

Length is the detail people forget. Inseam and total length vary batch to batch, and a pair that photographs cropped may pool at the ankle on you — or the reverse. If the listing gives length, trust the number over the model photo, since you don't know the model's height.

Cargo and technical pants have extra failure points worth checking in QC: do the pockets sit flat, are the drawcords and toggles functional, do panels align at the seams. On printed or paneled shorts, look at where a pattern meets a seam — clean alignment signals care.
